Beverly, a North Shore town of 40,000 people, has an area of 22.7 square miles, 27% of which is water. With a coastline bordering the Atlantic Ocean, it has designated itself as the Birthplace of America’s Navy. Neighboring towns, however, dispute this claim. In addition, it is considered the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. For many years, United Shoe Company was the town’s largest employer, along with Parker Brothers, famous for the game of Monopoly.
For those wishing to take advantage of outdoor activities, there are five beaches, two yacht clubs, coves, islands and parks. Bordering Manchester-by-the-Sea, one can admire the Oceanside mansions along Route 127. President William Taft summered in Beverly Farms, as did many other prominent families. Beverly Farms was the inspiration for the name of Beverly Hills, CA.
